EVALUATION

The task was to create a front cover for a magazine and to design a mock up contents page. My magazines masthead is the "Wyke college magazine" so you instantly know its a college magazine for Wyke. In order to complete my task I had to get a model and take images, I got my model to pose with a guitar so it goes with the main headline of my magazine "music departments rocking out". I then out of the images I had taken, chose one to edit using photoshop, to make it look like the front cover of a magazine and then needed to print it black and white onto A4 paper. I then had to do a mock up of my contents page on publisher showing where certain text and images would go.

I wanted to make my magazine so it had the model that was a rocker type of guy so it went well with the whole music department story at Wyke, and it also worked with the headline saying "music departments rocking out". So sticking to the rock theme worked really well.

The audience for my magazine is mainly the students at Wyke college or people looking to attend, it could also come in use to staff at Wyke as well. There are many different stories that come in use to different people and what will interest different people. It gives all the information on new plans, doing stuff with the music department, events and what the college can do for the reader. So the audience works well as it is suitable for students and staff as there is bits all would like to know.

I found making the cover of my magazine easy. I first looked at other college magazines to get an idea of how I should make my own look. I then planned out what my magazine cover would need. Took the images using my digital camera and then chose one to edit using adobe photoshop to create a magazine cover. I made the background for the magazine two different greens by using the gradient effect tool, put the image on and removed all the whit background so the green was shown, then put the text on and made the masthead a good size and made it gradient shade so its eye catching. I put a stroke effect around the model so it looked like there was a shadow and then got an image of a bar code off the internet to add to the magazine. The Contents page mock up was even easier to make. I went on Microsoft publisher and chose to have a blank page. I then created many text boxes with writing inside saying whether the position the text box was in was where image or text would be placed.

In conclusion, I do think my magazine cover could have been much better if I had been given more time to complete the task. I would have had more time to edit more photos and chose a magazine cover to use. I would have also been able to test different stories and get images of different things. My magazine was quite successful though, nothing seemed to go wrong, the only problem I had at first was making the background look right because before I discovered the gradient tool it was solid lime green, so i discovered something that improved it quite a bit.

FINAL DESIGN FOR MAGAZINE COVER

I did a few changes from the draft. This is now my finished magazine cover.

DRAFT OF FRONT COVER/CONTENTS PAGE

I used photoshop to start editing my photo to start making it into the front cover of a college magazine.

here is my draft of the front cover...

I also did a mock up for my contents page.

Here it is....

WHATS NEEDED

IDEA DEVELOPMENT

I want my magazine to have a wyke student playing the guitar so that it automatically gives off the impression that the magazine's main story is about the music department. I plan on my magazine name to be simple so im calling it "Wyke college magazine" i will make sure its a colour that stands out and that it is a good size. The main headline will be "Music Departments Rocking Out".

these are all the images i took..

The image im going to use...

I am going to use this image because the model is communicating with whoever will be looking at the magazine. He looks happy which will make the college look like its a happy plave to be.

LIIAR ANALYSIS OF A COLLEGE MAGAZINE

This magazine also uses a mid shot close up of a student. The student is well dressed, and is carrying books to do with law and business, which automatically gives off the impression the the student is rather intelligent. The background is black and the students clothing is black and white, the masthead "college lifestyle" is green, so with all the other colours this stands out really well but still does not take the attention off the student/model. There is many headlines/stories on this magazine the main one been "dance hall's bright future", you can tell this because it is the headline that stands out the most.

The magazine will have been produced by the specific college. The male used to model for the magazine is black so this shows the college accepts people of different race's. The magazine also has a ride variety of things to read up about to give you all the right information you need to know about the college.

This magazine has been produced to give you all the latest information an educate people about the college and what's going on. Stories like "make money on campus" and "the ultimate spring break escape" are all things that interest students and will be things they want to know about. All students are interested in job's and getting money so the "make money on campus" story will be a lot of help.

The target audience for this magazine is students that are wanting to know all the latest news, what's good and bad at the moment, things to do and also what's actually going on at the moment. You can tell this because of all the variety's of topics. Its like a college gossip magazine.

The college and students are been represented. The male on the front looks very smart which makes a good impression on the college and the students that attend. Its also good showing the college does not mind what race you are to attend. The wide variety of stories in the magazine also makes the college look good as it's giving you plenty of information.

LIIAR ANALYSIS OF A COLLEGE MAGAZINE

The image used for the front cover of this college magazine is a mid shot. The image shows what it needs to and by looking at it you automatically recognise that the main story of the magazine is to do with science. You can also tell this because of the headline that says "doing science at beloit" which must mean there is going to be information on the certain course that the college provides. In the frame of the image there is a space above the girls head, this was so when it came to editing the image there would be enough room to put a masthead that is easily noticed, there is also the date on the magazine so you know if the magazine is new or old.

This magazine will have been produced by Beloit College. The magazine is showing a student doing a science experiment to give away that the magazine's main story is going to be about the science course at the college. It also give the impression that science is for anyone, because usually a Caucasian male would have been selected as they are seen as more likely to be doing work to do with science, but the image used shows that science is also suitable for females and anyone from a different race.

This magazine has been produced to get people to read about doing science at Beloit college. It is to educate people about the course and also to persuade them to do science, going back to the image on the cover it's basically saying science is for anyone, anyone can do it.

The target audience for this magazine is students or someone looking to go to Beloit college. You can tell it is for students because the image is of a student and the main story is about doing science at the college so this magazine in-particular is trying to persuade students to do science.

The students and college are been represented. The student on the cover of the magazine looks like she is taking an interest in the subject, which will make the college look good as students are taking interest. Also the student used represents that any one can do the course that is the main story of the magazine, no matter what your gender or race is, so this also gives a good impression on the college.

Task Brief for College Magazine

My task is to create a front cover of a college magazine and a draft of a contents page for students.  The font cover has to have one image that is a mid-shot close up of a person of my choice and it has to have a masthead and headline. The contents page has to be a draft showing where all the images and text should be placed.
